CHRISTUS Health expands neurological care on San Antonio’s west side

CHRISTUS Health is expanding neurological care on San Antonio’s west side, providing patients with the latest technology to diagnose and treat strokes more efficiently and quickly, when minutes truly matter.
The Philips neuro biplane system at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital – Westover Hills is a minimally interventional system that is the first of its kind on the west side of town, offering increased access for patients living in west Bexar County and surrounding communities.
“This technology provides incredible magnification and clarity so we can spot lesions and cure them,” said Dr. Ryan Morton, a neurosurgeon with CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System. “The patients feel the same when they’re done and actually get to go home the next day, as opposed to spending several days in recovery.”
Morton joins CHRISTUS Santa Rosa after serving 16 years in the U.S. Army. A San Antonio native, he graduated from Churchill High School.
“I owe the community so much for everything it gave me,” he said. “I’m a product of the school system from elementary through high school. So, just to be back in my hometown and to be able to give back is very, very impactful and meaningful.”
He said CHRISTUS has invested in technology and space to diagnose and treat neurological conditions and to provide patients with compassionate care after surgery. CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital – Westover Hills also now has a neuro-intensive care unit (ICU).
“That is a big highlight,” he said. “We have dedicated neuro ICU doctors and nurses who are going to take exceptional care of our patients, which ultimately provides better outcomes for patients.”
CHRISTUS Health can treat the most complex and common brain and spine conditions with its partnership with TNSPINE.
"CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System means a great deal to TNSPINE,” said Dr. George Galvan, neurosurgeon and founder and CEO of TNSPINE. “It was the launching pad for the growth of our group and we are deeply proud of all we have accomplished together, taking care of our patients and bringing new technology to the community. We're equally proud of the charitable spirit and the constant support, trust and loyalty that CHRISTUS has shown to TNSPINE. As we look ahead, we're truly excited about what the future holds for this amazing partnership and the community at large."
A neurology clinic will open on the Westover Hills campus and start seeing patients in the new year.
“We are investing in top-notch health care for our patients,” said Derrick Cuenca, CEO of CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital – Westover Hills. “As this side of town continues to grow and expand, we are constantly looking for opportunities to connect people to the health care they need and deserve. Accessibility is a priority, and we are doing everything we can to ensure our community receives the excellent care they need close to home.”
